A rumor among three In A rumor among three, the artist gathers three figures in a proximity-filled space where each gaze retains its own reserve. The central face, built in turquoises and whites, sustains the composition; to its sides, the tilt of one head and the upright presence of the other introduce an asymmetrical balance. The figures seem to partake in a confidency whose content remains out of reach of the spectator. The Cubist structure unfolds through broad planes and superimpositions that compress the distance between the characters. Reds, corals, and oranges surround the clarity of the faces, while deep blues provide continuity to the whole. The surface preserves the traces of the brushstroke, with areas of thicker matter alongside others where the weave of the canvas is perceptible. That variety brings a vibration that accompanies the contained tension of the scene. At the bottom, the hands and the fan-like arrangements concentrate a second focus of attention. Their diagonals link the characters and guide the gaze toward their expressions. The title finds its meaning here: the rumor seems to circulate among gestures, silences, and oblique gazes. In this way the artist builds a shared intimacy, though never fully revealed.
