The Vigil of the Senses In The Vigil of the Senses, Eve Lezcano brings together portrait and still life in a scene dominated by a face of intense asymmetry. One eye narrowed and the other widely open establish two registers of attention within a single presence. This duality introduces a tension between contemplation and alertness that extends to the whole: ordinary objects acquire an almost physical proximity, while the space retains the strangeness of an interior vision. On the table, the bottle, the two glasses, and the fruit bowl form a nucleus of abundance and encounter. The stringed instrument climbs diagonally to the right and links that foreground with the face. At the upper end, a circular orange motif pierced by a white crescent moon prolongs the game of gazes and reinforces the nocturnal atmosphere. The composition rests on black contours that delineate and connect the forms. Blues and turquoise envelop the scene; intense pinks cross the face and the background; yellows and oranges concentrate light in the objects. The surface displays an especially active brushwork, with smears, overlaps, and marks that interrupt the uniformity of color. This material density provides gestural energy to the Cubist construction. The work allows reading the still life as a meeting of sensory experiences: the taste suggested by the fruit, the latent sound of the instrument, and the sustained attention of the eyes. The artist places these correspondences in a space where perception remains awake. Each object participates in an intimate expectancy, as if the scene still preserved the intensity of a recent conversation or music.
