E. García - María y el cisne XL

“Maria and the Swan” is a 100 × 70 cm painting by contemporary artist Ernest García. The work features a portrait in which a woman holds a large white swan in her arms. The proximity between the two figures creates a image of strong visual presence, where the animal occupies a large part of the foreground while the protagonist’s face emerges from behind its long neck. The composition is organized through large masses of color. The white of the plumage contrasts with the yellow and orange of the dress, the intense blue of the background, and the wide pink and red brushstrokes that surround the figures. The swan’s red and black beak introduces a small but powerful chromatic focal point that visually connects with the woman’s lips. The brushwork is broad, visible, and expressive, especially in the plumage and in the background. The treatment of the human figure preserves greater definition, creating an interesting contrast between the precision of the portrait and the gestural freedom of the rest of the composition. “Maria and the Swan” combines portrait and animal representation in an elegant and singular scene, marked by the closeness of the two protagonists and by an intense palette that lends strength and contemporaneity to the image.
