Dutch school (XX) - Huis met monumentale boom

Atmospheric Dutch pastel on paper. House with monumental trees Signed and dated 1936. In the spirit of Jan Toorop. The overall condition is good, with signs of age. Framed without glass. Special and atmospheric pastel on paper, depicting a house with reddish-brown shutters, partly hidden behind an impressive group of old, leafless trees. The monumental tree in the foreground forms the powerful focal point of the composition; the gnarled branches spread out like a fine network across almost the entire image plane. Noteworthy is the strongly linear and decorative treatment of the trees. The dark, winding outlines and the rhythmic branches give the work an almost graphic character. In this expressive line, there is a clear stylistic kinship with Dutch art around 1900 and early modernism, particularly the drawings and landscapes of Jan Toorop. The work is explicitly not attributed to Toorop, but shows an interesting influence of the visual language with which he and his contemporaries experimented. The soft use of pastel also creates a wholly distinct atmosphere. Muted tones of ocher, gray, violet, and red contrast beautifully with the dark tree structures. The result is a silent, slightly melancholic landscape that strongly recalls a winter day or an early spring day. Also the somewhat simplified rendering of the house and its surroundings contributes to the special character: not a photo-correct registration is central, but line, rhythm, color, and mood. The pastel is neatly framed behind glass, with a wide light mount and a classical gray-green wooden frame with silver-colored accents. The frame shows age and wear consistent with the age and character of the whole.
