This painting shows a seascape with several sailing boats, the largest boat centrally positioned in the composition. The dark sails stand out strongly against the menacing, cloudy sky, in which brown, green, and gold tones have been used. The light breaks in spots through the clouds and is reflected in the water, creating a striking contrast between light and dark. The rolling sea and heavy clouds give the painting a mysterious and almost dramatic atmosphere.
