DU CHOUL (Guillaume). A Treatise on the Religion of the Ancient Romans, Their Castration, and Military Discipline; On Baths and Ancient Greek and Roman Exercises. S.l. [Lyon], Guillaume Rouille, 1581. 2 parts in one in-4 volume, fawn sheepskin, gilt fillet, spine decorated with fillets, brown title label, edges speckled with red (Binding circa 1700). A collected edition of texts by the Lyon antiquarian Guillaume Du Choul (1496–1560) on the civil and military customs of the ancient Romans. It is illustrated with a very large number of woodcuts in the text, copied from medals and marble sculptures that the author had studied in France or during his stay in Rome; the Discourse on Castrametation and Military Discipline is adorned with 37 full-page figures. The engraving on p. 48, depicting a nude Mercury with his genitals visible, is intact. An old handwritten bookplate on the title page (traced over with ink). Title leaf stained with repair on the reverse; tear at the upper corner of leaf O3; water damage at the top and at the corners of several quires. Lacks the fold-out illustration mentioned by Baudrier (IX, p. 383) depicting the Roman Camp. Repairs to the caps and corners; spine creased.
