What the LR 40 set includes Gauges: .040 / .060 / .080 / .100 Material: Stainless steel wrap wire Construction: Round wound on a round core, which is unusual in the industry Scale: Long scale (typically 37 3/4") Tension: Light Tone and feel Across the sources, several consistent characteristics appear: Bright but not harsh — described as “musically bright” without abrasive overtones Highly flexible — the round core makes them softer and more pliable than hex core strings Smooth for stainless steel — less raspy than Dunlop or DR Fat Beams Punchy and lively — strong attack and clarity, especially in the mids and highs Long life and durability — repeatedly emphasized by DR and retailers Gentle on frets — stainless steel but designed not to “eat your frets” Who they’re for Hi Beams are widely recommended for players who want: A bright, cutting tone that stays bright for a long time Easy playability thanks to the flexible round core Punch and definition in rock, funk, fusion, and modern pop. A lighter feel than medium or heavy sets. They’re used by well known bassists such as Sting, Geezer Butler, Adam Clayton, Bootsy Collins, and Chris Wolstenholme How LR 40 compares to other DR strings Versus Fat Beams: Hi Beams are brighter and smoother, while Fat Beams are warmer and thicker. Hi Beams also feel less coarse Versus hex core strings: Round core Hi Beams are softer, more flexible, and have a more “musical” brightness DR Hi Beam MLR 45 are long scale, stainless steel, round wound bass strings on a round core, known for bright, punchy tone, flexibility, and long life. What they are; A 45–100 gauge set: .045 / .065 / .080 / .100 Stainless steel roundwound construction for clarity, brightness, and punch Built on a round core, which increases flexibility, musical brightness, and a smooth feel Long scale, fitting instruments up to 37.75" Tone & feel Designed for extra bright, clear, and punchy sound with strong articulation Not harsh—DR emphasizes a musically bright character rather than brittle highs The round core gives a more flexible, soft feeling string with a vintage leaning warmth underneath the brightness Excellent string to string balance and consistency Best for these playing styles Slap bass: multiple reviews highlight excellent slap response and “perfect crunch” Fingerstyle: expressive, bright, and responsive Pick playing: still clear and punchy Suitable for rock, funk, jazz, and any style needing clarity and attack Durability & build Known for long life and corrosion resistance thanks to stainless steel They don’t eat frets, a common concern with steel strings Made in the USA Pros (from sources & user reviews) Bright, punchy, articulate tone Flexible and easy to play due to round core Long lifespan and stable tuning Great for slap and funky playing Cons noted by players Some users report the E string can feel slightly “dead” for slap when first installed Higher price compared to many other stainless steel sets Fit & compatibility For 4 string electric basses Long scale (up to 37.75")—fits most standard basses Summary If you want bright, punchy, flexible, long lasting stainless steel strings that excel at slap, fingerstyle, and modern tones, the DR Hi Beam MLR 45 set is one of the most respected options on the market.
