In ancient times, the Mediterranean was seen as the garden of the sea god Neptune, and the mysterious underwater world was considered a place of danger, but was also full of beauty and treasures. Coral has always been a particular treasure of the Mediterranean. With its wonderfully warm color, it still delights today and exudes a touch of summer - at any time of year. This necklace from around 1900 is made from Mediterranean coral. The corals, which have been cut into pearls, are a light salmon color. This is natural precious coral from the Mediterranean, the so-called "Sciacca coral". It was harvested south of Sicily in the late 19th century and was mainly used to make coral bead necklaces. The corals used here are of very good quality. They show only a few growth characteristics that identify them as a natural product. Two rows of hand-cut beads are arranged in a graduated pattern and become thicker towards the center. The necklace has been restrung by us and fitted with a matching gold clasp from around 1970.
