Donald Sultan (American, b. 1951), Dried Red Rose

Ukiyo-e woodblock in colors on Tosa Kosa paper, 1994, pencil signed, titled, dated, and numbered 41/125, with full margins, framed. Sheet size 9 x 11 1/2 in. Donald Sultan was born in Asheville, North Carolina, and earned his BFA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill before completing his MFA at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Emerging to prominence nationally and internationally in the late 1970s, Sultan became known for bold, simplified imagery that moves between representation and abstraction, often incorporating unconventional industrial materials such as tar, linoleum, enamel, and Masonite. His work is present in major collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC; the Asheville Art Museum, Asheville, North Carolina; the Tate Britain, London; Centre Pompidou, Paris; and many others. A beautiful impression on an overall bright, clean sheet; few minor foxing marks; not examined out of frame.
