Polychrome faience letter holder – Louis XV style / rocaille – Galant scene and maritime landscape Office letter holder in polychrome glazed faience, with two compartments, in Rococo style. Its contoured silhouette, the dynamic borders and its arched little feet evoke the Louis XV aesthetic. One face features a gallant scene depicting a couple in a pastoral landscape. The other is adorned with a maritime landscape with a sailing ship near a tree-lined shore. Floral bouquets and pink and green swirls complete the decoration, notably on the sides and inside the compartments. The decoration appears hand-painted. This piece fits the taste of 18th-century French faience, whose forms and décors were taken up by various manufacturers in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Its manufacture is presumed to be from the late 19th to the first half of the 20th century, with no definite dating. The manufacturer remains unidentified. The underside bears the number 843 painted in blue as well as a green X-shaped mark. Condition: several chips and small losses visible at the corners, on the borders and some reliefs, as well as crazing of the glaze. The support surfaces under the feet show areas not glazed, wear and signs of dirt. No obvious repair has been detected in the photographs, though a restoration cannot be ruled out. The photos are an integral part of the description and help assess defects. Height: 15.5 cm Width: 23 cm Depth: 13 cm Weight: 1,255 g. A decorative desk object whose two faces offer different scenes, combining the use of a mail sorter with the charm of Rococo decor. The photos are an integral part of the description; please refer to them to judge the condition and dimensions. Shipping costs are calculated to be as fair as possible to ensure fast, high-quality shipping with optimal protection of the object. Happy bidding
