Rare group of three original British India Masonic documents relating to the same Freemason, James Rhodes, and documenting his Masonic career in Bengal and Cawnpore between 1926 and 1931. The group comprises: 1. District Grand Lodge of Bengal – Calcutta, 11 January 1926 Original appointment certificate issued to Brother James Rhodes, appointing him to the office of District Grand Deputy Sword Bearer in the District Grand Lodge of Bengal. Dated A.L. 5926 / A.D. 1926. Signed by the District Grand Secretary and District Grand Master and bearing the large blue seal of the District Grand Lodge of Bengal. 2. District Grand Chapter of Bengal – Calcutta, 4 March 1929 Original Royal Arch Masonic document issued to Companion J. Rhodes, appointing him Past District Grand Assistant Sojourner. Issued under H. R. Nevill, C.I.E., O.B.E., V.D., I.C.S., Grand Superintendent of Royal Arch Masons of Bengal. Signed and sealed. 3. “Sir John Edge” Lodge of Mark Master Masons No. 497 E.C. – Cawnpore, India – 1931 Original certificate concerning Bro. James Rhodes. It records that he ceased to be an active member on 14 February 1930, with all dues paid, and was made an Honorary Member. Certificate issued at Cawnpore on 13 July 1931, with signatures and lodge stamp/seal. The Sir John Edge Lodge No. 497 at Cawnpore is historically documented: contemporary Masonic records record its warrant among the new Mark Master Mason lodges established in 1896. Together, these documents provide an unusual record of the Masonic activities of James Rhodes in British India, involving three different branches/bodies of English Freemasonry: Craft Masonry, Royal Arch Masonry and Mark Masonry. Condition: Original documents showing age-related wear, old folding creases, handling marks and some edge wear, as visible in the photographs. The documents have not been restored. Seals, stamps, signatures and manuscript/typed entries remain clearly visible. Period: 1926–1931 Places: Calcutta (Kolkata), Bengal and Cawnpore (Kanpur), British India Number of documents: 3 Language: English Originals, not reproductions.
