Dickens (Charles) A Christmas Carol, first edition, first issue, second state, with "Stave I" heading to first chapter, title printed in red & blue dated 1843, green endpapers, half-title in blue, 4 hand-coloured etched plates by & after Leech and 4 plain woodcut vignettes by Linton after Leech, 2pp. advertisements at end, minor rubbing and surface marks to endpapers, original first issue brown fine-ribbed cloth, with unbroken 'D' within wreath and minimum 14mm gap between blind border and gilt cartouche, spine lettered and decorated in gilt, spine lightly sunned, slight chipping to spine head, rubbing to joints and corner tips, a few minor surface marks to covers, g.e., overall a superb copy, [Smith II, 4], 8vo, Chapman & Hall, 1843.
