An in-depth study of the Van Eyck brothers’ work and their role in the emergence of 15th-century Flemish painting. The author compares the works with historical and documentary sources and naturally gives central attention to the Ghent Altarpiece, its attribution, and the respective contributions of Hubert and Jan. The book constitutes an important scholarly synthesis on the Van Eycks and remains a sought-after monograph for its documentation.
