Derbyshire. An Elizabethan manuscript deposition, n.d. [c. 1560-78], 3pp of MS, docketed both in a contemporary and a later 17th c hand verso, on the matter of an allegation in a suit about subtraction of tithes brought by Richard Raylton, rector of Eckington, against Thomas Jackson and George Fletcher of Staveley viz. the pair's tithes for lambs and wool on Staveley Common, during the episcopacy of Thomas Bentham, Bishop of Lichfield and Coventry, the legal document containing the four depositions of Arthur More, Robert Littlewood, Robert Lylly/?Lilly, and Robert Fenton, all Staveley parishioners, all of whom had 7 articles/questions put to them, 1) Were you born in Staveley?; 2) What was the parish's tithing system/arrangements?; 3) What was the system of ?slocking the Commons?; 4) Are you related to Fletcher or Jackson; etc., with [3]ff of 20th c MS notes and extracts, foolscap, (4) Provenance: ? Heanor Hall, Derbyshire; inscribed note on one of the 20th c transcripts. As well as offering a fascinating - if brief - snapshot into the legal machinations of the Tudor ecclesiastical courts, the narrative always offers snippets of regional colloquialisms before a standardised English, i.e. 'yene', probably a contemporary Derbyshire verb meaning 'to wander'.
