DENMARK. Penny, ND (1035-42). Lund Mint. Harthacnut (Hardeknud). NGC Unc Details--Peck Marked. Hauberg-1; Hauberg Collection-493; Malmer-640/1605; Bruun-1371; Weight: 0.93 gms. Moneyer: Thorcel. Nicely struck and very detailed exemplar of the uniquely Danish type featuring the Midgard Serpent. In this particular and very rare variant, there is another smaller serpent gazing into the maw of the big one, just waiting to be devoured. Even more interesting are the legends leaving out the name of the king in favor of that of both the moneyer, Thorcel, and that of Alfward, who seems to have functioned as the chief manager of the Mint at Lund. Estimate: €1,000 - €1,200. Provenance: From the L.E. Bruun Collection. Ex: Countship of Brahesminde Collection (Private Sale - 1922). To view supplemental information and all items from the L.E. Bruun Collection, click here. Please note: Bid amounts do not include VAT. Buyers which are non-VAT registered entities or individuals who take delivery of lots within EU countries subject to margin scheme taxation will be invoiced a VAT charge and a Buyer’s Premium for a total of 27.5% based upon the total amount of the hammer.
