Stunning Bracteate of the Highest Rarity and Importance DENMARK. Penny (Bracteate), (1157-82) - Denmark. Northern Jutland Mint. Valdemar I (the Great). NGC--Chipped. Hauberg-18; not in Hauberg Collection; Poulsen-JY30.1; Bruun-2309. Weight: 0.25 gms. Despite the light chipping outside the legend, this is a stunning specimen boasting an exquisite patina ranging from blue to brick-red, with every detail appearing as if struck yesterday. This type - known exclusively from the Biersted hoard, which yielded only two examples: the present coin and one now in the National Museum of Denmark - ranks among the most important of the period. Its meticulous lettering explicitly states Valdemar's full name and royal title, thereby eliminating any debate regarding its attribution. Estimate: €3,000 - €4,000. Provenance: From the L.E. Bruun Collection. Ex: Countship of Brahesminde Collection (Private Sale - 1922). Ex: Biersted Hoard (1860). To view supplemental information and all items from the L.E. Bruun Collection, click here.
