Delicate Pendant Brooch with Turquoise & Pearls, England c. 1900

Every country and every era has its own fashions, which sometimes differ more, sometimes less from those of other countries and eras. In Great Britain, perhaps favored by its insularity, we find several quite unique fashions in the 19th century that we cannot observe in mainland Europe. One of these passions was the love of jewellery made of warmly glowing yellow gold, set with countless small pearls and colored stones - a very beautiful example of this can be seen here. Two intertwined spirals of gold are set with pearls and turquoise. A small floral ornament leads to the loop, and a large cultured pearl suspended from the loop completes the design. The colour of the turquoise - the shade of forget-me-nots - and the pure white of the pearls complement each other beautifully. The yellow gold tone adds a warm undertone. The graceful piece of jewellery can be worn both as a brooch and as a pendant thanks to a pin on the back and a loop that can be detached. The piece of jewellery is made from a 15-karat gold alloy, which was introduced in Great Britain in 1854 and only used until 1932. This helps to date the piece. We found the beautiful piece in London. The large attached pearl is a modern addition.
