Decorative ornament - Late 19th C

Antique Late 19th C. Spanish Spelter & Bronze Cherub Putto Candle Holder (2.6 kg) Offered for auction is a charming and authentic late 19th to early 20th-century figural candle holder, featuring a classic putto (cherub) figure. Acquired from an antique market in Cartagena, Spain, this piece is a wonderful example of Rococo Revival / Art Nouveau decorative arts. Materials & Construction: This piece features a fascinating mixed-metal construction, typical of high-quality foundries of the era. The intricately detailed main base and the putto figure are cast in spelter (a zinc alloy) with a dark, aged bronze patina. Notably, the two flowing "leaves" that wrap around the back of the putto and rise from the base appear to be solid bronze. This mixed-metal technique was used to balance cost with structural integrity, and it gives the piece a substantial weight of 2.6 kg. Design & Original Function: The putto is depicted in a dynamic pose with one arm raised. The hand features a small mounting stub, indicating it originally held a decorative "flaming torch" finial. Interestingly, the piece shows no signs of wiring holes or electrical conversion, confirming it was originally designed as a candle stand or oil lamp base. It remains in its original, un-drilled state. Condition: The item is in good antique condition. It has recently been carefully cleaned and polished, revealing the sharp casting details and a rich, even dark patina with warm bronze highlights on the high points. The original flaming torch finial is missing, leaving the mounting stub visible in the hand. There is minor, expected wear to the base edges and feet, consistent with its age. Please examine the photos carefully for detail, especially the close-ups and the underside. Dimensions & Weight: Height: Approx. 31-32 cm (as shown next to the tape measure in the photos) Base Width/Depth: Approx. 20-22 cm (at the widest points of the feet) Weight: 2.6 kg Provenance: Purchased from an antique market in Cartagena, Spain. Condition Report Overall: Good antique condition. Defects: Missing original torch finial (mounting stub remains). No electrical wiring holes. · Wear: Patina rubbing, minor surface scratches, and expected aging. Shipping & Logistics Shipping from: Spain.
