Antique 19th-century aftaba - a heavy, hand-hammered copper can with a lion-head spout - Islamic canteen water vessel. This is a beautiful example of 19th-century Islamic metalwork from the Ottoman Empire. This heavily worked hammered copper can, also known as an aftaba, was an important part of traditional hospitality and was used for ritual washing of the hands and ablutions. Key features: Craftsmanship: fully hand-forged from thick copper plates, with authentic "swallow-tail" joints: a hallmark of pre-industrial craftsmanship. Zoömorphic detail: the spout is cast from solid brass in the shape of a roaring lion’s head, which in Middle Eastern culture symbolizes power, protection and royalty. Dimensions and weight: with an impressive height of 37 cm and a weight of 2 kg, this is a substantial collectible, significantly heavier than modern reproductions. Patina: the vessel retains much of its original patination (kalai), which over a century of use has developed a rich, dark patina, with flashes of warm copper visible underneath. Historical context: aftabas of this size and quality were valuable possessions in wealthy households in the Middle East. Also used for handwashing for priests. The lion motif serves as a guardian of the water, making this not only a vessel but also a piece of symbolic art. It is a perfect showpiece for boho, rustic, or globally inspired interiors. Condition: excellent antique condition with small dents and surface wear consistent with age (about 150 years old). The handle is sturdy and original. Beautiful original decorative piece.
