Vaas - The Zwing, sea-green speckled glaze with pinched form • marked 'Noordwijk' • Koen Mertens (attrib.) • 1927–1931 - Earthenware Turned vase with a glossy speckled glaze that ranges from sea-green to light gray and three depressions pressed into the wet clay. Marked Noordwijk: a work of pottery De Zwing, which lasted only four years. A turned earthenware vase from De Zwing in Noordwijk, from the short period 1927 to 1931. The speckled glaze swirls from sea-green to light gray and purple-gray, the interior is deep green. Three depressions have been hand-pressed into the still-wet wall. The glaze flows uninterrupted over it: a deliberate hand-form, not damage. For this object there is also a Buy now price set, for those who want to acquire it immediately without waiting. The underside is unglazed and shows the light, creamy shard; at the foot the glaze has run out into a dark, purple-brown edge. Koen Mertens came from the Kennemer Pottery and founded De Zwing in 1927. He threw sober shapes, known for the horizontal color bands. In addition to those band decors, the workshop produced monochrome and speckled glazes, like this specimen. The crisis forced closure in 1931. Condition: Good. Lip: a few small glaze chips where the glaze is visible at a few points on the shard. Edge: light glaze wear. Some brown iron specks in the glaze, production characteristics. Glaze run and kiln speckles at the foot, production characteristics. No cracks or restorations observed. See the images. Offered as a decorative object, not intended for food use. In the interior: Matches an Art Deco or Amsterdam School interior, and beside modern studio work on a windowsill or shelf. In side light the speckles glow and the three depressions appear as shadowed bowls. Shipping: Professionally packed in a sturdy box with cushioning material, for fragile objects a double box. Attribution and sources: Marked Noordwijk and thus De Zwing: in the consulted sources the only art pottery pottery factory in Noordwijk between the wars. Porcelain Factory De Kroon (Noordwijk, 1906–1910) falls off on shard and period. The design is, as with Botterweg Auctions usual for De Zwing, attributed to founder Koen Mertens.
