Rare edition of this work by Jean-Louis Guez de Balzac (1597–1654), one of the most celebrated essayists of 17th-century French literature, nicknamed “the reformer of French prose” for his stylistic elegance. L'Aristippe, first published in 1658, is a philosophical and didactic work that, reflecting on the virtues and vices of courtiers, blends philosophical discourse and practical advice inspired by the teachings of the Greek philosopher Aristippus to offer a useful guide for navigating the complexities of power, while maintaining personal integrity and ethical principles. See Graesse, I, p. 284. Jean-Louis Guez de Balzac, Aristippe ou de la cour. Divisé en sept discours, Coulogne, Par Etienne de la Place, 1704. PP.: 280, (II), COMPLETE. Copy with leaves in overall good condition, with the usual signs of use and age. The upper outer corner of pp. 237–240 is missing, with no loss of text. Binding in nineteenth-century half parchment with a spine label bearing the title, overall well preserved. Endpapers white. Blue edges.
