Daylight Dancers Diptych - Newel Hunter

Daylight Dancers Diptych by Newel Hunter Painting 22.0 x 14.0 :: Painted on two superior quality 11 x 14 inch synthetic paper panels (yupo) Daylight Dancers Diptych is a perfect example of Hunter’s uniquely expressive style -- which so often results in arresting images with a sense of depth and sculptural form. Daylight Dancers consists of two adjacent panels featuring sweeping dynamic black brushstrokes on a stark white background. The compositions evoke a sense of fluid motion and organic form with each panel displaying broad curved strokes that twist and fold in upon themselves. The left panel has a smooth stretched appearance while the right panel displays a denser concentration of textures and a stronger presence of dark bold swaths blending into lighter washes. There are subtle gradations of gray where the paint dilutes creating a delicate interplay between light and shadow. The overall effect is reminiscent of calligraphic gestures or folds of fabric conveying both energy and elegance. This diptych harnesses the power of monochrome to create a compelling visual dialogue between the two panels. The balance between the bold and delicate brushwork invites viewers to trace the flow encouraging a contemplative engagement with the forms. The contrast in textures and densities adds depth without overwhelming the simplicity of the black-and-white palette. The strength of this diptych lies in the fluidity and spontaneity of the brushstrokes which imbues the art with a live visceral quality in Hunter’s signature style.
