This glass bowl is an example of pressed glassware known as 'cloud glass'. Cloud glass was developed in 1923 by Thomas Davidson of George Davidson & Co in England and was made by adding streaks of dark-colored glass to lighter glass, creating a dramatic effect of swirling clouds. New, inexpensive and aesthetically appealing, cloud glassware was an immediate public success and was quickly adopted by other companies, including Sowerby in England and Walther & Sohne in Germany. 'Purple Cloud' was the first in the range produced by Davidson's & Co. This bowl is therefore attributed to them. Later in the 1930s cloud glass was produced in a range of different styles and colors, including topaz, green, grey and blue, sepia (brown). Different manufacturers used different colors. The bowl is made with a matte exterior and a glossy interior. Perfect condition. Photographing purple is not easy. The purple color is in reality much deeper than the photos imply.
