David Ryckaert (1586-1642) XVII Navolger - De Schoenmaker (No Reserve)

Description: follower of David Ryckaert II (1586 to 1642) Title: The Shoemaker Dating: seventeenth century Technique and support: oil on canvas Dimensions: 57.5 × 84.5 cm; with frame 66 × 93 cm Signature: unsigned Compositional relation: after a earlier example documented in RKD under #605344 Style: Baroque David Ryckaert II, also written as David Rijckaert II, was born in 1586 in Antwerp and died there in 1642. He worked as a painter and art dealer and became a master in the Antwerp guild of Saint Luke in the guild year 1607–1608. His oeuvre includes still lifes with food, tableware, glass and metal utensils. He was the father and teacher of David Rijckaert III, who devoted himself to genre scenes. This distinction is relevant for the localization of artisanal interiors: genre scenes previously attributed to David II are nowadays associated with his son David III. Object description The painting shows an artisanal interior with on the left a seated, bearded shoemaker leaning over his work. He wears a dark green-blue upper coat, a brown apron and red stockings. On the right sits a woman with a white head covering and a red upper garment at a spinning wheel. Between them stands a low wooden worktable with, among other things, a pair of scissors, a shoe and a bowl. On the left lies a hammer on a wooden block. On the back wall hang shoes and a diamond-shaped panel with a scene. In the dark background on the right there are two more figures. At the bottom right a cat lies. Technique and material analysis The canvas is doubled and stretched on a wooden stretcher with a vertical central stave. Faces, hands and folds of clothing are modelled with small brushstrokes. Local light accents mark the tools, the bowl and the white head covering. The surface shows both fine mesh craquelé and longer, irregular cracks. The yellowed varnish and darkened paint portions limit legibility of the dark passages. Composition and formal analysis The two seated figures determine the horizontal order. The worktable connects the two groups, while a vertical wooden stud delineates the background. Overlaps of figures, furniture and tools create depth; the smaller figures on the right mark a further space. Light concentrates on the faces, hands and foreground objects. Brown and dark green tones form the base; the red clothing parts and white accents create connections and local contrasts. Stylistic and art-historical context The artisanal subject, the placement of figures in a dark interior and the focused lighting align with seventeenth-century genre painting within the Baroque. Attention to daily tasks and individual utilitarian objects supports this localization. These formal characteristics do not provide independent grounds for attributing the work to a specific artist. Comparable artists Adriaen van Ostade, Cornelis Bega, Quiringh van Brekelenkam, David Teniers II, Adriaen Brouwer Condition The painting requires restoration. The canvas has an antique doubling and the painting contains retouches and localized loss of paint, including along the edges. Later stretcher. Fine and coarser craquelé patterns traverse the surface. The varnish is yellowed and the paint areas are darkened. Recommendation: Restoration Conclusion The Shoemaker is an unsigned seventeenth-century imitation within the Baroque genre painting. The subject unites artisanal labor and domestic activities in an interior. The identification of the maker remains open. Doublure, retouches, paint loss and yellowing determine the current material condition; restoration is necessary. The work "The Shoemaker" is housed in a new black wooden frame with a silver-colored finish Total dimensions: 66x93 cm Medium dimensions: 57.5x84.5 cm All shipments in professional packaging via FedEx, DPD or PostNL.
