DAGGER Melanesia, Indonesian New Guinea, Asmat people 20th century Reptile lower jawbone and plant fibers, antique patina L. 59 cm Provenance: - Pierre Langlois Collection - Stéphane Martin Collection, Paris A headhunter’s dagger known as an ew karowan. The handle is covered with a fiber braid depicting the stylized head of a bird (a cockatoo?). According to ancient writings, these large daggers were used primarily for the ritual killing of captives.
