Along the way, Freshfield reflects on the legacy of Hannibal and his army, which notoriously crossed the Alps with elephants over 2,000 years ago. The book analyzes the famous crossing of the Alps accomplished by Hannibal in 218 BC during the Second Punic War. The author examines the classical texts of Polybius and Livy and debates the Alpine passes actually traveled by the Carthaginian army (such as Mont Cenis, Col de l’Argentiere, or the passes of the Durance), blending geographical and historical expertise. An important, and rare, document in this original edition, for anyone interested in mountaineering and ancient history.
