Cymbiola deshayesi (80 mm

Cymbiola deshayesi (80 mm

Scientific name: Cymbiola deshayesii (Reeve, 1855) – in the German-speaking world known as the Deshayes Whelk or New Caledonia Whelk. Origin & Localities: Pacific Ocean; this high-quality piece originates from waters around New Caledonia (frequent collection sites are in the Belep Islands or near the Isle of Pines). Since many maritime zones in New Caledonia are now strictly protected and targeted collecting is hardly possible, first-class shells like this come almost exclusively from renowned old collections. Habitat: A rare deep- and shallow-water dweller that lives on muddy sandy bottoms as well as on the upper reef slopes at depths of 3 to 50 meters. Size & Preservation: 80 mm – an outstanding and monumental size for this species (while most pieces in circulation measure between 50 and 70 mm, an 80 mm specimen ranks among the rare large pieces). Condition GEM (Absolute Museum- and top-quality): Flawless shell lip, completely intact apex, and a perfectly smooth surface where the characteristic, vibrant orange-gold spiral bands stand out without any scratches or growth flaws.
