Cybis by Helen Granger Young Figurine, Blackfeet 'Beaverhead Medicine Man'

This bisque porcelain sculpture by Canadian artist Helen Granger Young, depicts a Blackfeet medicine man seated atop a bear, dressed in richly colored buckskins and mounted on a carved wooden base. The side of the figure is marked with Cybis marking, and number 148. The work reflects Young's meticulous research into Blackfoot culture, yet it was never publicly displayed, as neither the artist nor Cybis obtained permission from Blackfoot Confederacy elders to depict a ceremonial figure. With its detailed craftsmanship, vibrant coloration, and complex cultural history, this piece represents both a striking example of mid-20th-century porcelain artistry and a thought-provoking dialogue between artistic interpretation and cultural protocol.
