CORONET. — October 1937. Vol. 2, No. 6, Issue No. 12. Chicago, Coronet, Inc., David A. Smart, publisher, October 1937. 8vo, paperback, 192 pp., color illustrated cover. Text in English. Numerous black-and-white photographs and illustrations. An old issue of Coronet, an American monthly magazine founded in 1936 and part of the same publishing group as Esquire. David A. Smart served as its publisher from 1936 to 1961. A particularly interesting issue for photography This October 1937 issue is of real significance in the history of the dissemination of modern European photography in the United States. It notably features several photographs by Erwin Blumenfeld and Brassaï, who were then still in the early stages of gaining international recognition. The reproduced photographs include, notably: Erwin Blumenfeld: “Portrait before Notre Dame” (p. 60) and “Broken Doll” (p. 116); Brassaï: “A Chair in the Bois” (p. 61) and, above all, the exquisite “Laughing Torso” (p. 117). Blumenfeld’s inclusion is particularly interesting: the chronology established by the Jeu de Paume confirms that in 1937, his photographs began appearing in *Coronet*, alongside his work in *Verve*, *Photographie*, and *Arts et métiers graphiques*. Brassaï was also contributing to *Coronet* at that time, in addition to *Harper’s Bazaar*, *Verve*, *Picture Post*, and *Vu*. The issue also contains a very extensive section devoted to the arts: ivory sculptures, Cézanne, engravings by Brockhurst, Dutch paintings, lithographs by Mabel Dwight, Limoges enamels, as well as a substantial section of portraits and photographic studies. The cover reproduces a portrait of a man by an anonymous 15th-century Dutch painter, housed at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. Shows signs of wear, but the copy appears to be complete. The cover is heavily rubbed, with creases, small tears, and paper loss, particularly on the spine and in the lower right corner of the front cover. The spine is brittle; edges and corners are worn. A few old marks on the back cover. The interior is in significantly better condition, with slightly yellowed paper and a few small marginal tears.
