Cornell Capa (1918-2008 American), Savoy Ballroom, Harlem, 1939

Cornell Capa (1918-2008 American), Savoy Ballroom, Harlem, 1939

Gelatin silver print, 1939, printed later, artist's embossed stamp at right, published by the International Center for Photography and with their blindstamp lower center, numbered 27/100 to verso, unframed. Sheet size 13 7/9 x 10 7/8 in. In this vibrant photograph, Cornell Capa captures the energy of Harlem’s legendary Savoy Ballroom, a celebrated center of jazz music and swing dancing. The Savoy opened in 1926 and was renowned for its integrated dance floor and its role in popularizing the Lindy Hop. Capa’s photograph conveys the movement, rhythm, and exuberance of a landmark in American musical and cultural history. Overall very good condition; some minor spots only visible when viewed under raking light; a hint of wear at sheet edges in margins.
