Cornelis 'Kees' Terlouw (1890-1948) - Intiem Hollands...

A brilliant, incredibly atmospheric and museum‑documented oil painting on an oak panel by the Dutch Impressionist Cornelis ('Kees') Terlouw (1890–1948). This finely nuanced work hails from his sought-after early Dutch period (circa 1910–1915), in which he was strongly inspired by intimate interior scenes and the masterful play of light of the Hague School. Subject: The painting depicts an intimate Dutch interior. A woman, engaged in handiwork or reading in traditional costume (wearing a white cap), sits by a large window. Terlouw demonstrates his sublime talent here by capturing the incoming daylight with a thick, bold brushstroke (impasto) beautifully on the woman’s shoulders and her cap, creating a serene and hushed atmosphere. Museum-worthy Heijdenrijk frame (AJH): The panel is set in the original, richly decorated gold-colored Baroque frame with a linen inlay. The back of the frame bears the pristine, rare oval hallmark 'AJH' from the world‑famous and most prestigious Frame Shop A.J. Heijdenrijk Jr. of Amsterdam. Heijdenrijk produced handmade top frames for esteemed museums (such as the Rijksmuseum). The frame is in excellent condition and forms an inseparable, historical whole with the painting. Historical traces & Discoveries (Provenance): This object exudes pure art history and shows fascinating, authentic features: • Signature: Full and crisp signature lower left, 'C. Terlouw'. The signature is fully embedded in the original craquelure of the paint. • Pentimento (Year): In the lower right, beneath the dark paint, the original hand-painted ochre-gold letters 'ANNO MCM...' (In the year 1900...) faintly show through. This historical phantom trace proves the early dating of the work. • Carved sale code: On the back of the oak panel is the authentic early 20th‑century inventory code '27/6 N 98 6 or b' carved into the wood. This is a rare administrative trace from a renowned historic Dutch auction house (such as Mak van Waay), wherein the canvas was stored in warehouse section N-98-(6)B and sold as Lot. • Biographical label: The back also contains an old, original biographical label about the painter. Specifications: • Artist: Cornelis ('Kees') Terlouw (1890‑1948) • Medium: Oil on oak panel • Dating: ca. 1910–1915 (Early Dutch period) • Panel dimensions: 30 x 40 cm • Dimensions including frame: 53 x 43 cm ( thickness: approx. 4 cm) • Condition of painting: In very good, authentic condition. Beautiful, stable craquelé consistent with age. • Condition of frame: Excellent condition, minimal signs of age. A unique opportunity for collectors of early Dutch impressionist art and antique quality frames. The lot will be packed and shipped with the utmost care and insured.
