This lithograph by Corneille, signed bottom right and dated 1999, presents a fanciful composition in which human and animal figures are placed very close to one another. Two stylized faces are combined with a striking bird-like figure, surrounded by clear fields of yellow and blue. The simple, powerful lines and almost childlike shapes give the work a spontaneous and playful appearance. In particular, the combination of human, bird, and vivid colors is characteristic of Corneille’s later visual language: from the late 1960s these figurative motifs increasingly recur in his work. Corneille was the artist’s name of Guillaume Cornelis van Beverloo (1922–2010), born in Liège and one of the leading Dutch artists associated with the CoBrA movement. Together with, among others, Karel Appel and Constant, he belonged to the experimental artists who, after World War II, sought a free and spontaneous way of making art. Corneille drew inspiration from, among other things, children's drawings, nature, people, and his many travels. Later he developed a highly recognizable, colorful visual language in which women, birds, and celestial bodies often feature. In addition to paintings and drawings, he produced a lot of prints, which helped his work reach a broad audience. Edition: E.A. Signed bottom right and dated 1999 Viewing is possible
