Corneille (1922-2010) - Hoofd met vogel

This colorful and expressive artwork by the famous artist Corneille (1922–2010), co-founder of the influential CoBrA movement, is a beautiful example of his characteristic and imaginative visual language. Against a deep dark blue background, the vivid colors in orange, red, green and yellow stand out particularly powerfully. Central in the composition, a stylized bird with outstretched wings hovers, seemingly symbolizing freedom and zest for life. In the lower left there is a mysterious female face with a striking blue eye and green lips, while two red, tree-like shapes at the bottom suggest a playful and almost fairy-tale landscape. The strong black contour lines and simple, geometric forms give the work a distinctly expressive appearance. Birds, women and nature are recurring themes in Corneille's oeuvre, who drew inspiration from travel, exotic cultures and the uninhibited creativity of children. The combination of bright colors, symbolic figures and a playful composition reflects his love of artistic freedom and imagination. The result is a particularly lively and harmonious artwork in which the recognizable style and colorful world of Corneille come together in an impressive way. Corneille was the artist's name of Guillaume Cornelis van Beverloo (1922–2010), born in Liège and one of the leading Dutch artists associated with the CoBrA movement. Together with, among others, Karel Appel and Constant, he belonged to the experimental artists who after World War II sought a free and spontaneous way of making art. Corneille was inspired by, among other things, children's drawings, nature, people and his many travels. Later he developed a highly recognizable, colorful visual language in which especially women, birds and celestial bodies frequently appear. In addition to paintings and drawings he made extensive graphics, which brought his work to a wide public.
