Contained - Newel Hunter

Contained by Newel Hunter Painting 16.0 x 20.0 :: Painted on an 16 x 20 x .25 inch canvas panel Contained is a perfect example of Hunter’s uniquely expressive style -- which so often results in arresting images with a sense of depth and sculptural form. This monochromatic composition focuses on a small square area on a white canvas. Inside this square various intersecting textures and gradients of black and gray create a smoky almost ethereal effect. The edges of the square are defined by distinct deliberate brush strokes framing the chaotic and organic spread of the darker shapes within. The central form which resembles a swirling mist-like mass contrasts with the solid linear brushwork around the borders creating tension between control and randomness. The piece conveys a strong sense of atmosphere through its limited color palette and the interplay of texture and light. The composition's minimalism allows viewers to focus deeply on the nuanced treatment of the black area which holds a mysterious and intriguing quality. The contrast between the sharply defined edges and the soft fuzzy interior shapes is particularly effective in drawing attention and evoking curiosity. This work like much of Hunter’s portfolio successfully uses simplicity and abstraction to invite personal interpretation a powerful aspect of his modern minimalist art.
