Emile Liez, hat maker for ladies, great collector of old rare almanacs, in collaboration with the publisher Emile Devambez, around 1909, issued two spoof almanacs including this one. The other being The Laces of Venus. There does indeed exist an almanac published by Jubert in 1786 bearing the title "The amusements of Paris" but the comparison ends there. According to the description by John Grand-Carteret in his bibliography of Almanacs, there is nothing in common between this late 18th-century almanac and this pastiche produced by Emile Liez and Emile Devambez. The verse pieces are different, the engravings are different. It is therefore a deliberately staged pastiche by this discerning amateur with the help of the art publisher Devambez. All served by a quality worthy of the originals. The coloring of the prints is perfect. The paper used is a fine thick laid paper. The binding itself rivals the finest gilded-plate bindings of old almanacs from the 1780-1800 period. The binder even went so far as to use starry gold paper for the inside covers and flyleaves. This small volume, very curious in its conception and very interesting in its beautiful realization, deserves the attention of modern bibliophiles. Although printed in 500 copies, the beautifully preserved copies like this one have become rare. Very fine copy.
