Cokedale, Colorado. Gottlieb Mercantile Company. 1911 10 Cents. PMG Fine 12. No. 63868. In the present, Cokedale is home to roughly 120 individuals while remnants of its past as a company town can still be observed. The ruins of 350 coke ovens can still be found to the southeast of the townsite while the old Gottlieb Mercantile Building has been repurposed as the town's administrative center and post office after functioning as a general goods store during the town's heyday long before ASARCO withdrew in 1947. Today aside from ruins and various buildings that speak to Cokedale's past, scrip notes like this one provide a tangible connection to the daily realities of life in Cokedale and hundreds of similar company towns spread across the United States. PMG comments "Minor Repairs." Estimate: $800 - $1,200. Click here for certification details from PMG.
