Claude Lorrain (1600-1682), After - The Village Fête - XL format

An oil painting on canvas of exceptional quality and imposing scale, offering a magnificent interpretation—dating to the 17th or 18th century—of the celebrated masterpiece *The Village Fête* (1639) by Claude Lorrain (Claude Gellée), an undisputed master of the classical Baroque landscape; the original work is currently housed in the Louvre Museum. The painting perfectly captures the lyrical and poetic essence of Lorrain’s concept of the "ideal landscape." The composition is defined at the sides by majestic, dark trees acting as *repoussoir* elements, framing a vast, luminous background bathed in the breathtaking golden light of a sunset over the Roman countryside. In the middle ground, an ancient arched Roman bridge spanning a river and the silhouettes of classical towers in the distance evoke a nostalgic, timeless past. In the foreground, a lively and richly detailed group of figures—comprising peasants and noble onlookers—gathers in a bucolic, Arcadian atmosphere amidst dancing, music, and leisure. The technical execution is remarkable: the artist masterfully handles complex atmospheric perspective, rendering the way distant hills gradually fade into the warm evening sky. Rich, layered glazes and a subtle play of shadow reveal the hand of an expert artist, trained in the prestigious Roman or French landscape schools of the Baroque era. Period: Late 18th/early 19th century. Color: Multicolored (warm tones of gold, ochre, and burnt sienna, contrasted by the dark greens of the foliage and the blue of the sky); Signature: None. Cleaning the canvas is recommended to make the quality of the painting even more exceptional. The lot will be securely packed and shipped via partner couriers with online tracking. Shipping outside the European Community is not available for this lot.
