All auctions / Miscellaneous / Clara Lumière (XX-XXI) - Autoritratto, da Arnold Böcklin
Oil painting on canvas, an authorial copy created by an artist who is not famous, inspired by the famous "Self-portrait with Death Playing the Violin" by Arnold Böcklin, kept at the Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin. The composition faithfully reproduces the original work: the painter, portrayed bust-length with brush and palette in hand, turns to the observer with an intense and vigilant gaze, while behind him the figure of a skeleton emerges, playing the violin with a single taut string, symbolizing the "memento mori" and the transience of life tied to the creative act. The strong chiaroscuro contrast, typical of Böcklin's symbolism, highlights the bearded face of the artist against the dark background from which the skeletal presence rises. This is a painted copy, not an original work nor a print: the painting was entirely done by hand with oil technique, carefully detailing the face, the color palette, and the anatomical rendering of the skeleton. A subject of great symbolic impact, suitable for collectors passionate about Symbolist painting and for those who love vanitas themes in art.
