ow available at auction from Second Vintage This sought-after Cosmotron presents a striking 1970s aesthetic, defined by a vibrant green gradient dial housed beneath a distinctive 9-facet crystal. Powered by an innovative high-beat electro-mechanical movement, this specific example retains its original signed stainless steel bracelet and offers a fascinating glimpse into a transitional era of Japanese horology. Brand: Citizen Model: Cosmotron Reference Number: 7803-790286 TA Serial Number: 40401357 Movement: Caliber 7803 electro-mechanical Dial: Green gradient sunburst with applied gold-tone faceted indices Case Size: 37 mm (excluding the crown) Case Material: Stainless steel Production Year: 1974 Condition: Good vintage condition. Dial and Hands Striking and exceptionally well-preserved, the dial features a vibrant green gradient sunburst finish. It is detailed with applied gold-tone faceted indices featuring black inserts, alongside the applied Citizen logo and Cosmotron symbol. A framed day-date window sits cleanly at three o'clock, displaying in English. The printing remains sharp with no visible degradation or moisture damage. The gold-tone baton hands with black central stripes are sharply matched to the dial furniture, showing minimal signs of oxidation, and are complemented by a sweeping gold-tone seconds hand. Case and Crystal The stainless steel cushion-style case shows honest wear with well-preserved overall geometry. The polished finish displays moderate surface scratches and scuffs consistent with age, extending to the integrated polished bezel area. A distinctive pusher is located at eight o'clock, and the partially recessed crown at three o'clock is clearly signed with the 'CTZ' logo. The caseback features a visible battery hatch. Above the dial sits the distinctive 9-facet crystal that creates a unique prismatic effect over the display, showing some light surface scratches and minor edge wear. Movement The watch is powered by the electro-mechanical caliber 7803. This innovative movement utilizes a battery to drive a conventional balance wheel via a transistor-switched coil, operating at an impressive high beat rate of 36,000 beats per hour. Additionally, the 7803 'Special' caliber incorporates a unique time synchronization feature utilizing the eight o'clock pusher, designed to reset the seconds hand to zero and synchronize the minute hand if within three minutes of the hour. Strap The watch is fitted with its original signed multi-link stainless steel bracelet, which is highly complementary to the aesthetic of the timepiece. The folding clasp is prominently signed with 'CITIZEN' and the Cosmotron logo. The bracelet shows moderate surface scratches and normal wear, accommodating a maximum wrist size of up to 18cm. Condition Good vintage condition. The dial and hands are exceptionally well-preserved, remaining clean and vibrant. The stainless steel case and integrated bezel display moderate surface scratches and scuffs consistent with age, maintaining honest wear and strong geometry. The original faceted crystal exhibits light surface scratches and minor edge wear, while the original signed bracelet shows moderate scratching and normal wear. Dimensions The case measures 37 mm in diameter (excluding the crown). Remarks This Cosmotron offers a compelling mix of bold 1970s Japanese design and transitional horological technology. The vibrant green dial and original 9-facet crystal create a remarkable visual presence, made even more appealing by the retention of its original signed bracelet. History Introduced during a fascinating transitional period in watchmaking, the Citizen Cosmotron bridges the gap between traditional mechanical calibers and the quartz revolution. Rather than using a mainspring, these electro-mechanical movements utilize a battery to power a conventional balance wheel. The 7803 caliber is particularly notable for its high beat rate of 36,000 beats per hour and its innovative synchronization pusher at eight o'clock. Citizen Cosmotrons featuring vibrant dials and original faceted crystals remain highly appreciated by vintage Japanese watch collectors for their unique design language.
