Christo & Jeanne-Claude (1935-2020) - The Gates New York

This special, hand-signed art print by Christo is devoted to the world-famous art project 'The Gates,' which Christo and Jeanne-Claude realized in 2005 in New York's Central Park. Bottom left, signed by Christo in pencil. A particular highlight is the original piece of saffron-colored project fabric attached to the bottom right of the sheet. Please note: the original fabric piece was added subsequently. About the artwork The composition combines various elements of the artistic planning with a vivid depiction of the realized project. Typical of Christo's working method, topographic maps, technical and architectural drawings, and colorful design sketches come together. In the upper section there is a detailed map of Central Park, illustrating the expansive grounds and the spatial extent of the project. Below emerges the view of the installation itself: thousands of bright saffron-colored fabric strips hanging from specially constructed gate frames and following the paths of the winter park. For 'The Gates' a total of 7,503 gates were erected, distributed along a distance of about 37 kilometers along the park paths. The intensely orange-saffron fabric strips moved in the wind, creating a striking contrast with the wintry surroundings. Framing: The work is professionally and high-quality framed in an exclusive Swiss hand-made Plexiglas showcase. The transparent presentation underlines the minimalist character of the white relief structure and allows for a particularly elegant viewing of the fine surface design. About the artists: Christo (1935–2020) and his wife and artistic partner Jeanne-Claude (1935–2009) are among the most important representatives of international environmental and conceptual art. Together they realized some of the most impressive temporary art installations of our time. Among their best-known projects are 'Wrapped Reichstag' in Berlin, 'The Pont Neuf Wrapped' in Paris, and 'The Gates' in New York. With their monumental installations, they changed the perception of architecture, landscape, and public space, thereby expanding the traditional boundaries of visual art.
