Late Qing Dynasty, ca. AD 1800 - 1912 > A Chinese bronze figure of a luohan seated with one knee raised, his voluminous robe falling in deeply modelled folds. The expressive face has prominent brows and a short beard, with contrasting inlaid details to the robe. A luohan, or arhat, is an enlightened disciple who has overcome the causes of rebirth. In Buddhist art, arhats are often portrayed with highly individual faces and informal poses, making spiritual accomplishment tangible through recognisable human character rather than idealised princely beauty. > For similar see: Sotheby's New York, 19th March 2016, lot 1369. > Size: 330mm x 275mm; Weight: 8.1kg > Provenance: Private London Collection; Ex.
