China, 1912 to 1913. Lot of 3 envelopes mailed from Shanghai, China, to Captain Geo. R. Marvell, U.S.S. Helena, Kiukiang, China, each franked with a green 3-cent Chinese dragon stamp bearing a red overprint. Includes covers with Palace Hotel Shanghai cachet, Kiukiang arrival marks, and a Republic overprint variety with Shanghai and Kiukiang transit marks dated 1 Aug 13. The U.S.S. Helena was a gunboat serving on the Yangtze River Patrol during a period of political upheaval in China. Envelopes only, no enclosures, with varying degrees of edge and flap damage. (3).
