Wondrous "Long Whisker" Dollar Pattern from the Empire's Final Year CHINA. Silver "Long Whisker Dragon" Dollar Pattern, Year 3 (1911). Tientsin Mint. Hsuan-t'ung (Xuantong [Puyi]). PCGS SPECIMEN-63+. L&M-28; K-223; KM-Pn304; WS-0040; Wenchao-105 (rarity: ★★★). Unadopted type with outer leaves veined. This type is undoubtedly among the most famous of pattern issues, and certainly one of the most demanded as well. Dating from the final year of the Ch'ing Dynasty, it displays a resounding coiled dragon that is instantly recognizable on account of its rather lengthy whiskers that have since influenced the overall name by which the type is known. Additionally, the dragon itself features a somewhat quizzical appearance, with its eyes wide open and its mouth expressing extreme aghast. On the characters side, this particular type displays outer leaves with a raised aspect to the veins--a minor design difference from some of the others related to this issue, where such veins are either not present, or present in incuse form. Exceptionally enthralling and enticing, with the most subtle burnished aspect imparted unto the alluring toning. A colossal RARITY, and one that should generate massive intrigue and interest on account of its extensive accolades. We note a similar example, also of this specific type and with an identical grade, that realized a total of $3 million in our May 2022 Hong Kong Auction (Lot # 51134). The head of the Central mint at Tientsin, Mr. Luigi Giorgi, served as head designer and chief-engraver from 1910-20. His many works are of outstanding quality in fine style and very artistic. Examples of his work include all of the 1911 pattern Dollars (L&M-28 through 35A), the 1910 silver Dollars and subsidiary denominations (L&M-24 through 27), 1914 Yuan Shih-kai patterns (L&M-67 through 73) as well as various other silver and copper issues. Several of his pattern designs were adopted and placed into full production with two of the most widely recognized motifs in Chinese numismatics being the 1911 Dragon in the clouds Imperial Dollar and the 1914 Yuan Shih-kai Dollar. Mr. Giorgi had the privilege of designing and creating the last Chinese Imperial issue which saw use well into the Republic. Estimate: $400,000 - $600,000.
