Chimu Blackware Vessels - Lord Effigy & Monkey Stirrup-Spout

Chimu Blackware Vessels - Lord Effigy & Monkey Stirrup-Spout

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Chimu. A pair of reduction-fired blackware vessels whose smoky, burnished surfaces carry the sooty sheen prized across Peru's north coast. The larger takes the form of a dignitary: a serene, high-cheeked face gazes out beneath a flaring, banded headdress that doubles as the vessel's flaring neck, while four modeled fruits or tubers swell in relief across the rounded body, a nod to agricultural bounty. The smaller, a stirrup-spouted effigy, is modeled as a crouching monkey wearing its own headdress, forelimbs and incised fur delicately rendered, with a diminutive bird perched atop the arching handle-spout. Once likely a functioning whistling vessel, its voice has since fallen silent. Together they exemplify the Chimu ceramic tradition, mold-made yet individuated, marrying utilitarian form with the imagery of rulership and the natural world. The Chimu kingdom rose from the earlier Moche and Lambayeque traditions, ruling the arid Peruvian north coast from its monumental adobe capital of Chan Chan until its absorption by the Inca in the late fifteenth century. Its potters perfected the lustrous black finish seen here, achieved not by glaze but by smothering the kiln in the final firing so that carbon soaked into the clay, a reduction technique that lent even mass-produced, mold-formed wares a rich metallic depth. The stirrup-spout form, inherited from a millennium of Andean precedent, allowed liquid to be poured with minimal evaporation and spillage, well suited to a desert coast. Effigy vessels depicting lords, animals, and hybrid beings served in feasting, offering, and funerary contexts, accompanying the dead as vessels of sustenance for the journey beyond. Item # 204119
