CHILE. Peso, 1817-FD. Santiago Mint. PCGS Genuine--Repaired, VF Details.

CHILE. Peso, 1817-FD. Santiago Mint. PCGS Genuine--Repaired, VF Details. KM-82.2; Jara-pg.5, Fig. 2. An EXTREMELY RARE and underrated coin with assayers letters FD. A wholesome looking example with moderate wear. The surfaces display attractive mottled gray patina with an iridescent sheen that pops out when tilted in the light. Close inspection reveal some light tasteful smoothing on the reverse at 3 o'clock from long ago, now subdued and attractive. Overall a pleasing piece that presents well and is sure to excite many collectors. The vast majority of the 1817 issue, including the Spanish colonial types were produced by the assayers Francisco Rodriguez Brochero and Jose Maria de Bobadilla. It is currently believed that Republican coinage dated 1817 was actually struck in 1818 after the battle if Maipu April 5. 1818 which effectively destroyed the Spanish forces near Santiago, and ended the Chilean War of Independence. At this point the Republicans decided to retroactively date their coins 1817 to emphasize their sovereignty as a Republic that year. The FD assayer was only used for a brief period of time on 1817 "Volcano" Pesos as is evident by the few available examples today. The existence of the 1818/7 overdate further supports this as it clearly shows this die was latter re-cut for the production of the 1818 issues. Estimate: $400 - $600.
