About the photographer : William Claxton grew up in La Canada Flintridge. His mother and brother are musicians. From a young age, he collected jazz albums and attended Duke Ellington concerts at the Orpheum. He took his first photographs with a Brownie camera. Later, he earned a psychology degree from the University of California, Los Angeles and did briefly postgraduate work at Columbia University[1]. He left the institution shortly after, hired by the producer and founder of Pacific Jazz Records, Richard Block, as a photographer. Several label album covers were subsequently signed by William Claxton[2]. He is notably known for his work with jazz artists of the 1950s and 1960s, including Chet Baker, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Mel Tormé, Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, and Stan Getz. William Claxton also photographed several celebrities and jet-set models and published a book on actor Steve McQueen[2]. He married actress and model Peggy Moffitt in 1959[3]. In 1967, he directed the film Basic Black. The production is now part of the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York[2]. In 2003, he received the Lucie Music Photography Award[4]. On October 11, 2008, William Claxton died from heart failure, one day before his 81st birthday[2].
