The coral (shanhu 珊瑚) has a special significance in Chinese culture. It belongs to the so-called eight auspicious treasures and symbolizes a long life and professional success. In ancient China, coral was believed to be an "iron tree" that grew under the sea and bloomed only once every 100 years. The red colour of the coral made it a popular talisman, as the colour was considered a symbol of luck, wealth and joy in ancient China. All good omens surround the decorative material of our brooch. It is carved from a piece of pink Momo-coral and shows itself in the form of blossoming or budding chrysanthemums. Artfully executed and rich in detail, the carving demonstrates the Far Eastern sense of grace and craftsmanship. Created in the second half of the 20th century, the brooch is a beautiful piece of Chinese arts and crafts that looks great on a blouse or lapel due to its colour.
