Charles Wysocki (1928 – 2002) The Breadman oil on canvas 24 × 48 inches signed lower center VERSO Signed and titled Label, Hirschl & Adler Galleries, New York, New York Wysocki biographer Betty Ballantine wrote, “Although a lot of baking was done at home, for families with large numbers of mouths to feed, the baker was a great convenience. Besides, there were many particularly desirable baked goods that were not bread. The baker could be counted on to provide special kinds of rolls – and doughnuts, cream-cakes, pastries, and worse – a feast to seduce the taste-buds and ruin the figure. “Of course, for anyone living on their own, perhaps in a roominghouse (as opposed to a boardinghouse, which generally provided meals), purchasing fresh-baked bread was a necessity. For this lucky person, the delectable smells of the bakery were a familiar daily delight. “Indeed, a town without a baker was a town without a heart.” PROVENANCE Hirschl & Adler Galleries, New York, New York, 1978 Private collection, Hamilton, Montana LITERATURE An American Celebration: The Art of Charles Wysocki, Workman Publishing, 1985, pp. 158-59, illustrated View More Information Condition Surface is in excellent condition.
