Cro-Magnon Prehistoric Man. Charles R. Knight (1874-1953). Guache and watercolor on paper. Signed and Dated at the Lower Left. 15 x 11 inches, 27 x 23 inches framed. There are less than a handful of Charles R. Knight?s prehistoric man paintings held in private collections. And, this one, his famous portrait of Cro-Magnon, is arguably the best and most important of them all. Knight?s understanding of what daily living was like for prehistoric man shines through in this magnificent painting. Here we see them drawing pictures of great beasts on the walls of their caves. Included are lovely images of mammoths, bison and reindeer that lived alongside them. This painting has been exhibited and reproduced in too numerous of places to list them all, but of particular note is that it was printed as the full back cover image on Knight?s classic art book: ?Dinosaurs, Mammoths, and Cavemen.?
