Format: Large 4to (substantial volume of 756 pages). Description and Particularities: Magnificent and imposing historical volume richly illustrated with more than 250 engravings in-text and out-of-text (scenes, views, portraits after David, Vernet, Duplessis-Bertaux...). It also includes facsimiles of period autographs (Condorcet, Joseph Le Bon) and a frontispiece engraved after Nadar. Note: The work contains remarkable plates drawing a parallel with the events and the ruins of the Paris Commune in 1871 (Portrait of Mgr Darboy, ruins of the Palais de Justice and the Hôtel de Ville). Binding and Condition: Magnificent publisher's binding in red percaline, the front cover and spine richly adorned with gold and black motifs, plate signed by the famous binder Paul Souze. Second board blind-stamped with a large vignette of the Seal of the First Republic (“Unity and Indivisibility of the Republic”). Three edges fully gilt. Condition: Binding remains sturdy. Interior clean with rare scattered foxing. Exterior showing signs of wear: corners bumped/softened, headcaps and joints rubbed with small signs of age (see detailed photos). A fine library copy.
